Bicentennial Man was one of the most incredible films I've ever seen!(And ive seen quite a few!!)My wife and i went to the sneek preview, and though the turn out was not as large as expected, I over heard no one that left disapointed! Robin Willams puts in one of his best performances to date,(can you say OSCAR!) and the rest of the cast was super as well, I especially liked Oliver Platt as the cybernetics researcher, and his assistant Galatia stole a large share of the laffs in the last third of the movie. But this is a movie, not about cybernetics, but about what it really means to "Be Human". It has nothing to do with genetics, or biology, it's about the human spirit, of if you prefer soul! and Andrew had one! Even though some of the humans were in doubt! It also had more great One Liners than both the "Austen Powers" movies combined! (and i liked them as well) This is one that will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and if you have a soul, it will make you think. SEE IT NOW! Jan 25, 2000
This movie examines the question of what makes a living thing human, assuming that an android can be a living thing. From a Christian perspective, I found this movie to be quite interesting. The movie was obviously not written by a beleiver, and so the observations about what makes a person human were not based on what God intended us to be, but on what the author's observations are of fallen man in his current state. The result is that the movie puts forth the idea that being human is a combination of lusts (food, sex, money...) and death. This perspective is logical from a non-Biblical perspective. It's wrong, but presented in a touching way. It's probably worth seeing for Christians, but remember that the perspective of the movie is that being human means being fallen. The movie will be disappointing if you don't keep that in mind. Watch it to gain a better understanding of how unbelievers think. Jan 25, 2000
Great movie.. good plot.. Excellent acting. Had a great mix of humor and sadness.. One of the better movies I've seen this year. Jan 25, 2000
Enough people get depressed at Christmas time without movies like this making it worse. Last Robin Williams movie I'll ever see. Jan 25, 2000
As a definite Robin Williams fan I was extremely disappointed in this film. It reminded me of Hoffman in the desert movie "Ishtar". I went to that film and this one because I felt like how can they not be at least pretty good since the actors are so great. Well, both films demonstrate that good actors don't equal a good film. My second reason for going was that I though it might be a good movie for my seven year old daughter to watch, and indeed there were a few moments in the movie that she would have loved, mostly at the beginning. But very, very few. So few that I have no intention of taking her, and for myself I felt distinctly cheated. The theme is one I love, which is how human can a machine get, and what would the various steps be, mean, or result in? But the answers were right out of the worst of New Age philosophy. Really really superficial stuff with tons of sugar over it all. And really, really unconvincing. Another image which comes to mind is someone telling a shaggy dog story. It's not worth the wait for the few crumbs that occassionally float by. Sorry to be a messenger bringing bad news. Jan 25, 2000
Highly recommended Robin Williams out does himself in this one. Funny yet serious Jan 25, 2000
This is not one of Robin Williams finer films. Of course, Robin Williams has not been making many good films lately, so, that is not much of a suprise. While I didn't see his last offering, Jakob the liar, I did see the movie preceding that; Patch Adams. While that movie was fairly entertaining, it wasn't anything at the level Williams is capable of reaching with his talent. (See Goodwill hunting or Good morning Vietnam for a good example of a good Williams movie) The same can be said of Bicentenial man. This movie has its moments. But, they are few in this slow developing marathon of a movie. This is one of those movies that was close to becoming quite good, but just missed the mark. Wait for rental and make sure you've had plenty of caffine before you watch it. Otherwise you might fall asleep while you're watching it. Jan 25, 2000
All i can say is if you are or ever have been in "love" then please by all means see this movie because i think if you have ever tried to change anything about yourself this might change your mind and let people except you for who you really are, it's a beautiful movie..and this coming from a guy..lol shhhhh :) Jan 25, 2000
An excellent interpretation of Isaac Asimov's wonderful stories. Robin Williams did work on a par with Fisher King. Great effects, touching story. Jan 25, 2000
If you were thinking of taking your kids to this movie that they are marketing towards children, don't! I thought it was full of inappropriate material for children. Fine for adults but don't take your kids unless they are older and can handle a mature theme. Jan 25, 2000
Amazing how boring and incredibly expensive a movie can be. Take your ticket money and buy yourself and kids a deck of cards and some jacks and ball. That is money well spent. Robin Williams...such a brilliant actor has to hide behind the facade of a tinman with dialogue written by a movie moguls son probably. Jan 25, 2000
First of all...I liked it. "Bicentennial Man" is a pretty cool film. Robin Williams is an android/robot purchased to do chores around the house of a wealthy family. The family names him "Andrew" and he slowly begins becoming a part of their everyday routine. But somehow, he begins to learn and begins to develop a deepening relationship with the family. While the movie is new, the storyline is a bit old, for it not only brings forth images of "Planet of the Apes", but also those from old TV shows as "Hazel", "The Jeffersons" and the "Brady Bunch". Now this isn't all that bad, it's just a bit repetetive. What it also does is bring a bit of the "Terminator" and 21st century reality into the picture. We are reading more and more about computers that can learn from their mistakes or robots that can perform simple tasks now. If you can imagine both the thinking computer and the robot being combined in the near future, then you have the "Bicentennial Man". While Robin Williams presents the story in a very warm and touching manner (similar to his role in "Mrs. Doubtfire"), you can't help but think about reality. I can't help but think of all the different animal rights groups that are around, protecting this species and that, protesting wearing of fur or eating of meat, keeping our tuna free of "Flipper", and making sure that no animal was harmed in the making of a movie...are we eventually going to see "Robot Rights" groups making sure they too were not harmed or scratched in the filming of a movie? Who knows? All I know is that I got off on a tangent here when all I wanted to say was...bottom line...while the real "Bicentennial" was 24 years ago, you will enjoy this "Bicentennial" today. This is a big piece of dog dookie. However, at least you can say that Robin Williams gave his greatest performance since Popeye. Feb 6, 2000
This is the first movie in a long time that I was close to walking out of. Not only did the screenwriter and director not know if they were making a comedy or an Isaac Asimov epic. And forget the PG rating, my wife and I were cringing during the last half hour with the bad language and sexual innuendoes. We went to the movie with our 7 and 9 year old boys, a movie that was advertized in conjunction with Toy Story 2 and ended up with: 'how many naughty words can we stick in here to spice up this bomb to appeal to 14 year olds'. There are plenty of good movies out there, but this isn't one of them. Feb 6, 2000
Good movie...something to do on a snowy saturday afternoon...Lots of good acting...and as always a message...but I didn't figure it out yet...Hey, the popcorn is good too. Aug 15, 2003
Robin Williams is in fine form in \"Bicentennial Man. He played a robot who wanted to be human. the film has taken the robot and us though 200 years in the future as he lost his family and yes, he falls in love. The film featured williams in a totally different role. Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for Bicentennial Man. |
